September 17 Self-discipline 1 Timothy 4:7-8
Have nothing to do with godless and silly myths. Train yourself in godliness, for while body training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come."
The living bible says," Don't waste time arguing over foolish ideas and silly myths and legends. Spend your time and energy in the exercise of keeping spiritually fit. Bodily exercise is alright , but spiritual exercise is much more important ....because it will help you in this life and the next.
Exercise is important. I told Mark that my goal is, for us to do as much as we can, for as long as we can, so that we can keep going for as long as we can.
We are in training to become the person that God knows we can be. It takes discipline to do the right thing. It is easy to backslide and fall back into bad habits. That goes for mental, physical and spiritual. With the brain, and our muscles , you have to use it or lose it. My broken elbow will not improve if I refuse to move it because it hurts. I have to do physical therapy every day to regain my full range of motion. The same goes for our spiritual growth. We need to discipline ourselves to read and study and pray daily until it becomes such a habit, that we can not imagine going a day with- out it. That is when you fall in love with the Word of God and the Author.
So, while exercise is important for our body, we really need to spend time doing things that are good for us in this life and the life to come.
Pray for discipline for all of us.
