Chapter 12 seems to be a turning point between Jesus and the Religious leaders. Several things happened that cause them to plot to kill Jesus.
The Pharisees condemned His disciples for eating grain in the field on the Sabbath. Jesus told them that He was Lord of the Sabbath and that He desired mercy more than sacrifice. He said that if they knew the law or who was in their midst, they would not condemn the guiltless. Later they condemned Jesus for healing on the Sabbath. He asked them if it was lawful to do good on the Sabbath. Then, when Jesus was healing and casting out demons, they thought that He was Beelzebul. Once again , Jesus knew their thoughts and told them that a house divided would fall. Later, the scribes and the Pharisees asked Him for signs to prove who He was. Jesus rebuked them calling them an evil and adulterous generation that was only getting worse. You may want to read chapter 12 to see some of the strong words Jesus had for these religious leaders.
