I am reading Franklin Grahams autobiography ,Rebel with a Cause. It is a very interesting book about Billy Grahams son, who, as a young man could have been called and PK times ten. It tells how he turn from a rebellious teenager to the leader of the Samaritan's Purse and so much more.
In chapter 16 of this book that was written in 1995, I found a very timely idea. His father was able to preach all over the world and manage to stay out of politics. I am going to write this paragraphs just as they are written on the bottom of 205 and top of 206. I did leave out the words nuclear war and disarmament.
"Day after day, I was impressed with the way Daddy always directed messages as well as responses to question back to Christ. He wouldn't allow himself to get sucked into any political issues or controversies. We attended these meetings two and three times a day. And as I heard Daddy's answers to questions over and over, something was being drilled into me."
"After several days of this, I prayed, "Lord, give me that ability in every interview I do from now on, allow me to do the same. I want to be able to take any reporter's question and turn it around to focus on Christ.
"To me, that was what truly mattered. Political issues would come and go . It was the gospel, the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes, that would endure. That is what I want to talk about."
My mama used to say, preachers come and go, but the church belongs to God. So, I say that politicians , come and go, but God is ultimately in control. That is why I do not talk politics.
I do not expect to ever be interviewed, but I would like to learn to keep the focus of my conversations on Christ and off of me and what I think.
